In 1912, The UPLB ROTC units was organized, one of the first ROTC units organized ever in the country. An officer of the Philippine Constabulary who informally conducted military training started it. With the outbreak of WW1 in 1914, the authorities felt need for a good reserve force of able bodied Filipinos trained in the art of war who could defend the national sovereignty against aggression.

In November 2, 1921, The university's Board of Regents requested the US War Department thru the Governor-Genreal, to provide the services of US Army officers as professors of military science and tactics. The request was granted on March 17, 1922. The DMST became one of the curricular departments of the University. In the same year, the Philippine Department of the US Army supplied the cadets with equipments and arms.

From then on, the UP College of Agriculture Reserve Officers Training Course which is now at UP at Los Baños Citizen Military Training has passed the test of time. it has lived up to expectations during WW2 in the 40's, during suspension of the training by the Philippine ground Force in 1951-1952, the anti-ROTC movements in the late 60's and the challenges brought about by the changing role of the military during the 70's.

At present the UPLB CMT unit is located at the foot of the legendary Mt. Makiling, 65 kilometers away from Manila, four kilometers from Los Baños town proper and two kilometers away from the shore of Laguna de Bay. It is administered by the UPLB Chancellor with the assistance of the Armed Forces of the Philippines thru the Department of Citizens Military Training
